RBG-Inspired Statement Necklaces

When the Supreme Court Justice dresses up her robe with a dramatic necklace, it spurs endless speculation as to the statement behind the accessory.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg is best known for two things: her decisively progressive perspective on the bench and her dramatic statement necklaces which spur endless speculation about their symbolism. She tends to wear a jubilant gold-embellished jabot (that she received as a gift from her law clerks) when she delivers a majority opinion. A weighty bejeweled jabot on a black enamel base is known as her dissent collar. And then there was the “dagger” collar she wore during Brett Kavanaugh photo day, not to mention the Justice’s favorite handmade lace collar which was sent to her by a fan. She gets lots of necklaces from fans.

Inspired by both her work ethic and her accessory aesthetic, we selected a dozen fabulous collars that we would totally rock, and we think RBG would love, too.

Turquoise & Gold Devon Leigh

Turquoise is as natural stone that has been carried by shamans and warriors as a talisman of protection and strength. We think it would serve RBG well on some of those tough deliberation days.

Viktoria Hayman Mother-of-Pearl

Mother-of-Pearl is associated with love energy, which could serve as a subtle statement during those heated discussions regarding reproductive rights.

Mignonne Gavigan Le Charlot Beaded Scarf Necklace

The scarf necklace is made of cloth, so it’s soft, but it’s heavily beaded which gives it a toughness. Gentle but strong. Hmm. Who does that remind us of?

Oscar de la Renta Crystal Sea Urchin Necklace

This is a necklace inspired by the form of the sea urchin. An “urchin” is a mischievous boy. It’s a little bit of a stretch, but it could be a subtle swipe at one of her younger, male colleagues on the bench.

$534, neimanmarcus.com

Rosantica Medusa Long Neon Fringe Necklace

This colorful necklace would raise a lot of eyebrows if RBG wore it on the bench, so she would probably reserve it for her days off. But we’re thinking it has a miscellaneous “youth Power” vibe.

$300, neimanmarcus.com

Mother of Pearl Cluster Necklace

This mother-of-pearl cluster necklace is a slightly more exuberant version of the white lace and pearl collars that RBG is known for.

$395, neimanmarcus.com

Cristabelle Graduated Fringe Statement Necklace

It’s dazzling and festive and powerful and charismatic at the same time. Or maybe we’re just thinking about how this dramatic collar would look on RBG.

$98, nordstrom.com

Light Horn Flower Collar

The flowers on this collar seem to convey a celebratory tone. Go RBG, it’s your birthday!

$1,295, neimanmarcus.com

Diamond Cut Bib Necklace in 14k Gold

Yep, it’s a big ticket item, and very dramatic. It’s what RBG is going to wear during her last day on the bench. She’s going to rip it off right before she storms off for good. Nope, that will never happen. RBG prefers to argue her point with intelligence and tenacity rather than fury.

$1,683, macys.com

Alfani Stone Geometric Statement Necklace

We love the simple geometry of this stone necklace. It’s the kind of thing that RBG would wear just for fun.

$55.65, macys.com

Monies Gold Foil Wooden Necklace

The Monies necklace made of hand carved wood covered in gold foil has a warrior-queen vibe to it. We think RBG would wear it to gloat when things on the bench are going her way.

$679.42, italist.com

Maison Margiela Necklace With Crystals

If RBG wore this avant-garde Maison Margiela necklace, it would probably be a national scandal because the metal shoulder clips suggest bondage or subjugation. Draw your own conclusions here.
